Coney
Island, Brooklyn, N.Y.

You can't discuss roller
coasters without mentioning Coney Island,
home of the world-famous Cyclone. It's one of the last urban parks
still in existence, having survived since the late
1800's.

The Wonder Wheel looks like
an innocent Ferris wheel, but in fact it's a stomach-churning
instrument of evil. As the wheel turns, the colored cars travel freely
along curved rails
-- swingingback and forth, back and forth, ad nauseum.

This tower is what's left of
the old Parachute Drop, which gave riders a panoramic view of Coney Island before quickly
lowering them to the ground. It was still operating during my childhood and no enticement
would get me on that ride. You sat in a little swing seat and for $1, someone would
send you plummeting to the bottom - sort of the precursor to the bungee jumping thing.
Another trick I'll never try. |
