Buses
Most bus routes in Manhattan run
north and south along the avenues, and east and west across the major cross streets (14th,
23rd, 34th, 42nd, 57th, and along streets that feed into Central Park roads). Bus fares
are $1.25, in exact change or by token. Senior citizens and disabled persons travel for
half fare at all times. You can ask for free transfers to connecting buses when you board
- one transfer per fare.
During rush hours, the city runs
special "Limited" buses that stop at major marked intersections. Commuter
express buses run between Manhattan and all four outer boroughs; the fare is $4.00, in
exact change or by tokens. Call the NYC Transit Authority, 718-330-1234 for commuter
express information, airport service, fare information.
Taxis and Limousines
NYC taxis are regulated by the NYC
taxi and Limousine Commission, which issues medallions for all licensed "yellow
cabs" in the city.
There are additional surcharges for
taxi fares : 50 cents per ride during evening or night hours (8 p.m.-6 a.m.), 50 cents for
use of the trunk, passengers pay all bridge and tunnel tolls. Drivers expect a 15-20% tip.
TLC rules oblige taxi drivers to
take passengers to any part of the city, or to Nassau and Westchester counties. Fares for
trips to Westchester and Nassau are twice the meter rate for the portion of the trip
outside city limits, plus double tolld. You may want to use a private car service for long
trips. Lost and found phone # is: 212-374-5084
Livery Services
There are about 30,000
livery-service cars licensed by the city, running from luxury stretch limousines to
corporate car services, to neighborhood sedan services. All of them are radio-based, none
is licensed to pick up hailing passenters.
Ferries
There are now boats with scheduled
operation to Manhattan from N.J., as well as one to Staten Island. All are small
passenger-only ferries with limited hours, usually tied to rush-hour commutes
Manhattan to Staten Island Ferry -
718-390-5253. Runs 24-hours a day, between St. George and South Ferry. The orange and blue
boats cross the five-mile upper harbor in 25 minutes. Passengers only, operated by the
Port Authority, 50 cents round-trip.
