COMPUTER RECYCLING CENTER
- Solicits donations of PCs and related equipment from corporations,
small businesses, academic institutions, health care facilities, federal
agencies and individuals. Participants in a job training program test
the equipment, refurbish it, and disassemble nonfunctioning computers
for recycling. Computers are sold or redistributed to nonprofit groups,
special needs students, low-income families and the general public.
UNIVERSITY CITY HIGH SCHOOL
- Formerly
a project with the Philadelphia Area Computer Society, University City
High School sponsors a Computer Servicing Technology program that is
part of a State-approved vocational program. The agency collects old
machines from businesses and individuals. Students inspect the donated
computers and refurbish them. Then, the group sells the reconditioned
machines to schools, nonprofits and other community-based organizations.
Income is used to pay wages of inner city kids who work in the program.University
