Stevie Ray Vaughan

Stevie Ray Vaughan
 Blues Foundation
Hall of Fame 2000 Inductee

Born in Dallas, Texas in 1954, Vaughan would follow in the steps of his big brother Jimmie Vaughan to find his dreams fulfilled through music. During his teenage years, Stevie started seriously playing around with his brother's guitar and picked up his vocal charisma from Doyle Bramhall, who played in the Texas band the Chessmen with Jimmie.

In the early '70s Stevie Ray joined Jimmie, Doyle, Lu Ann Barton and other Dallas/Fort Worth musicians who descended on Austin in what became known as the Austin migration. After years of honing in on his style through various Austin bands, Vaughan formed Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble with drummer Chris Layton and bassist Tommy Shannon. The trio released their debut CD Texas Flood on Epic Records in 1983. The offering proved that the Blues was alive in well in Rock and Roll, a bridging that had not been conquered so perfectly since acts like The Paul Butterfield Band and Jimi Hendrix did so in the late 1960's. As Stevie Ray Vaughan's music career was soaring with Couldn't Stand the Weather and Soul to Soul, he was plagued by drug and alcohol dependency.

After a 1987 tour, Vaughan checked himself into rehab and emerged a more focused artist with the successful In Step CD to prove it. Released in 1989, the recording peaked on the charts at number 33, reached gold status in six months and garnered Vaughan a GRAMMY® Award. Stevie Ray was at the beginning of a brave new world, mastering his craft as a vocalist and guitar player. On August 26,1990 after a gig in East Troy, Wisconsin with special guests Robert Cray, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton and Jimmie Vaughan, Stevie Ray Vaughan was killed in a helicopter crash.
