The
Harley...
and Some Biker Stuff
In 1903, four young entrepreneurs built the
first Harley-Davidson® motorcycle inside a small wooden shed in
Milwaukee, WI. Three were Davidson brothers. The fourth was Bill Harley.
The first year of production was three motorcycles. Yet they were
already built with the durability and quality that has made
Harley-Davidson a legend. Within a decade, motorcycles came rolling out
of Milwaukee at an ever increasing pace. By the early 1920s,
Harley-Davidson was the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world.
When America called up its troops in World War I, it also called upon
Harley-Davidson to produce dispatch and scouting vehicles. During World
War II Uncle Sam utilized all of Harley-Davidson's manufacturing
capabilities to produce more than 90,000 motorcycles for the armed
forces of America and its allies.
During the post-war years customer demand for Harley-Davidson
motorcycles soared. A second manufacturing facility was added in
Milwaukee in 1947. In the early 1970s Harley-Davidson acquired the
production facility in York, PA.
