A Heart

The Nerve

Yeah, it's sad, believe me, Missy,
When you're born to be a sissy
Without the vim and verve.
But I could show my prowess, be a lion not a mou-ess
If I only had the nerve.
I'm afraid there's no denyin' I'm just a dandelion,
A fate I don't deserve.
I'd be brave as a blizzard....

I'd be clever as a gizzard....
If the Wizard is a Wizard who will serve.
Then I'm sure to get a brain, a heart, a home, the nerve!

If I Were King Of The Forest

If I were King of the Forest, Not queen, not duke, not prince.
My regal robes of the forest, would be satin, not cotton, not chintz.
I'd command each thing, be it fish or fowl.
With a woof and a woof and a royal growl - woof.
As I'd click my heel, all the trees would kneel.
And the mountains bow and the bulls kowtow.
And the sparrow would take wing - If I - If I - were King!
Each rabbit would show respect to me.
The chipmunks genuflect to me.
Though my tail would lash, I would show compash
For every underling!
If I-If I- were King!

Judy Garland's salary was a total of $9,649.98 ...for
almost five months of work. Compare that to the exhorbitant
demands of today's "stars" - and this girl had talent. How
many of those will be remembered in sixty years?

And now for some debunking... in my travels through cyberspace while creating these pages, i stumbled several times upon that munchkin suicide thing. I had thought about that one before. Anyway, there is an official explanation, and it's listed in several sources. Not one of the Oz pages i've read supports the suicide theory. It's not the most glamorous or exciting one, but here it is: The rumor of the hanging/suicide has been circulated since 1939, when the picture was first released. MGM stated that at the time of filming,they had rented 300 birds from Zoo Park, in Los Angeles, to add to the atmosphere among the trees in some of the scenes. There were golden pheasants, a South American toucan, an African and a Saurus crane. A few of these birds escaped and appeared in various shots throughout the filming of the movie as shadows behind the characters.

The incident that occurred on the set of the Tin Woodsman (with the cottage) - the one that's famous for being the scene of the suicide of a munchkin - is the one everyone talks about. The explanation given is that it was one of the larger birds on that particular set that created the illusion of a person hanging. Considering that all of the munchkins seemed to be present and accounted for, and no record of death or suicide has been found, i can believe this explanation.
