History Lessons - Civil War Timeline
From The Library of Congress

Battlefield of Gettysburg Map

The 3,500 acre Military Park is a national park that includes the battlefields of the most decisive and bloodiest conflict of the Civil War. Start at the Visitor Center and Gettysburg Museum of the Civil War, which offers free maps and a permanent electric display that uses lights to show the deployment of the forces during the battle's various skirmishes. Continue your historic journey at the Cyclorama Center, which has exhibits, a free film, and the Cyclorama itself--a monumental painting-in-the-round by Paul Phillippoteaux of General Pickett's charge, the last ditch effort of the Confederate forces before their retreat; the multimedia presentation includes a sound and light program

Where To Shop In The Gettysburg Area
by VisitGettysburg

Shopping in the Gettysburg area can be a unique experience. You can hunt for wonderful treasures in many of the stores in downtown Gettysburg. The local merchants welcomeyou to browse through an array of antiques, clothing, craft, book and art stores. And don't forget to stop in the drug store and sit down at the lunch counter for an ice cream shake.

If it is Civil War memorabilia you seek, we suggest you take a walk down Steinwehr Avenue or Historic Dowmtown were you can find shops full of history keepsakes. There is even a general store that contains all the paraphernalia necessary to dress yourself like a Civil War general or lady of distinction.

Antiquing is a popular past time for many people, and there is no better place to find splendid bargains than in the Gettysburg and the surrounding areas, such as New Oxford, PA and Emmitsburg, MD. But if you are a more modern day shopper and you're willing to take a short drive, Lancaster, PA is home to a huge selection of outlet stores.

The area also offers its' visitors specialty markets, such as the Gettysburg Farmer's Market that sets up on the square in Gettysburg every Saturday morning from May until November.

Many surrounding towns host their own markets-so you remember to check the calendar of events for dates and times..
