The Poconos Visitor's Guide

In recent years, the Poconos' 2,500 square miles of forests, hills and waterfalls have begun to attract skiers, campers and avid outdoorsy types to Pennsylvania’s northeastern wilderness. In the summer, families get soaked on whitewater rafting trips. There are more than 100 types of trees in the area, and in the fall the brilliantly colored leaves are a scenic backdrop for train rides and driving trips. Winter hosts the local snow sport industry, and spring reintroduces golf to the stir-crazed vacationers. And 25 miles of the Appalachian Trail stretch through the area, luring visitors away from romance packages and onto the trail’s paths year round.

Thomas Penn, son of William Penn, finagled the land known today as the Pocono Mountains out of his father's treaty with the Delaware Indians in the Walking Purchase of 1737. Stretching across Pike, Monroe, Wayne and Carbon counties, the Pocono Mountains are actually a southern extension of the Catskills, and it seems the descendants of the Catskills' resort-goers of the '50s have claimed the Poconos as their territory. The roads are crowded in summer, hazardous in winter and clogged by Sunday drivers every day of the week.
